Welcome to Pohlen Hospital

Pohlen Hospital is a 25-bed private charitable trust hospital located in the heart of Matamata, surrounded by beautiful gardens and offering stunning views of the Kaimai Ranges. The hospital is well known for delivering high-quality rest home and hospital-level continuing care to members of our community. We offer both single and shared rooms with ensuite facilities, each with direct outdoor access.

The hospital was established through the generosity of local benefactor Joseph Pohlen, who gifted £180,000 towards the building of a district general hospital. In recognition of this significant contribution, the facility proudly carries his name.

Pohlen Hospital sits within a larger integrated care centre that includes a maternity unit (with four maternity rooms and two delivery suites), outpatient clinics, a medical centre, pharmacy, laboratory, physiotherapy services, x-ray, and ultrasound. Pohlen Hospital also provides a valued Meals-on-Wheels service, delivering fresh, hot meals to the local community five days a week. 

While Pohlen Hospital is independent of Te Whatu Ora, it is governed by a community-focused Board of Trustees and holds key Te Whatu Ora contracts for a range of services including:

• Aged Residential Care
• Transitional Care (Home Support)
• Respite and Carer Support
• Palliative and End-of-Life Care
